The CSA has enjoyed a number of key victories in its advocacy efforts on behalf of Ontario’s college and college-university students. Our victories can be attributed to our unique campaigns and important research, but most importantly the support and participation of our membership student associations and their students.
The right to exist
College student associations have been given the right to exist in Legislation through the Ontario Colleges and Applied Arts of Technology Act 2002. Since this Act is in place, nothing restricts a student government body from carrying on its normal activities and no college can prevent that body from doing so. Unfortunately, university student associations do not have this protection.
OACSFA
The CSA has joined with our partners in the Ontario Undergraduate Student Alliance to make recommendations directly to the Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities. This has resulted in $250 million in changes to financial assistance to help reduce financial barriers preventing students from attending college.
The McGuinty Plan for Postsecondary Education
Through our 2004 campaign, fundMEnow, Ontario’s college and college-university students saw a $6.2 billion investment of new money in postsecondary education system. This is the largest investment in over 40 years (since the creation of the college system).
Following up with this, our 2005 campaign, capTUITIONnow, the CSA was a key player in keeping tuition fee increases capped and responsible.
